I really think this pair of locations should end up in somebody's home video collection labeled, "The night we got engaged."

6. If you're not ready for the engagement, though, I have the perfect date idea based on another New York City romantic comedy, Serendipity with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. First you do a little shopping at Bloomingdale's located at 1000 3rd Avenue. This is where our couple first meets in the film while shopping for . . . gloves apparently. The store is located between 59th and 60th on which street you will find your next location, Serendipity 3, the ice cream shop-slash-novelty store where the couple visits next. The line at Serendipity's can be a bit daunting, so maybe this date should be an early morning shopping venture with a late brunch to beat the crowds.

7. If you're not looking for romance at all, I have the perfect duo for just plain New York city fun. There is a hot dog you absolutely must try if you visit New York City to celebrate films. The characters in You've Got Mail eat them, but the Gray's Papaya hot dog was immortalized I believe in the Matthew Perry/Salma Hayek film, Fools Rush In. Part restaurant, part street vendor, and dripping with New York City charm, the Gray's Papaya hot dog will set the perfect tone for fun and movie adventure in New York City. After that, it's quite a jog to the next location (which could be beneficial after that hot dog) but how about the giant toy store, F.A.O. Schwartz? You know you want to dance on that giant floor piano made famous by Tom Hanks in the movie, Big. Two stories of toys and the knowledge that you've played Chopsticks with your toes just like Tom. That's what these movie tours are all about.

Adventure Travel In Peru - Climbing Volcanic Crater Huambo - Part One

My alarm went off at 6:30 am, managed to get out of my warm bed at 7:00. It was another beautiful, but cold, winter morning here (well actually the last day of fall), not a cloud in the sky. I left the house at 8:30 and didn't even have to go back for anything that I had forgotten. Lately I have been hiking in my favorite canyon a lot, it starts uphill in the sun, climbs to a pass, and then goes down into the canyon. I start out with shorts and a T-shirt and usually am hot within five minutes, but not today. Today my plan was to hike up to a volcanic crater called Huambo, which is just above Cotahuasi. The crater is kind of horseshoe shaped, with the open side facing Cotahuasi. The highest part on the rim of the crater looked like the point on a crown, which of course was my goal. I started hiking along the base of Mt. Huiñao, which unfortunately was blocking the sun. I was freezing the first 20 minutes, even with a steady climb, until I finally got into the sunlight. After 30 minutes, I passed through a small village where the trail followed the road going through the village.

Right outside of the village I took what I thought was the continuation of the trail but it didn't seem as wide as I remembered it from about a year ago when I had last hiked here. Finally after about the fifth time of rock hopping and wall climbing to avoid the water (many trails here double as irrigation ditches, especially in the morning) I realized that I was on the wrong trail. I later found the correct trail, which branched off the road up a few minutes farther than this one. However this trail followed along the other side of a small canyon, until they both met up again at Cachana so it worked out well, especially as I prefer small winding trails. I hadn't been on either trail past Cachana before so asked a woman where the trail was "to up there" and pointed up to the crater near the rim of Cotahuasi Canyon. She pointed out a small path, about a foot wide and said that was a good trail that went all the way up. It started just past the local school.

A few minutes later as I was happily going up the trail, a young boy came running up behind me. He said that the director of the school in Cachana would like me to take some pictures of the students. I have no idea how he even knew I had a camera but I suppose most gringos here have cameras. I told the boy that I only had a digital camera, not a film camera (I had never gotten digital prints made here because they are too expensive). After he turned and ran back to the school, I felt convicted so turned around also and walked back about 10 minutes to the school. I found the director and offered to take pictures for them but said I could not get them printed for a few weeks, until I would be going to Arequipa. The director said he needed them in two days for a special project so that wouldn't help any. He had thought I might have an instant print camera.

Continuing on up the trail, I came to the last crossing of the road as it zigzags up the canyon wall to the rim. The trail didn't look like it crossed the road there, so I looked down the road a short distance and sure enough, there it was. I drive the road every week going to Toro and had never been able to see where the trail crossed there, even though I had been looking for it. A few minutes later, I saw a man coming up behind me but he stopped for a break and never saw him again. I am a bit competitive so when I can keep ahead of the locals it always makes me feel good! It was a steady climb up a narrow trail; I was going up about 35 feet per minute according to my altimeter. There were various trail junctions but I kept aiming in the direction of the crater and it was always the right trail. At about 11:00, I was following a small irrigation canal, which still ice on the edges, and all of a sudden the trail ended. I backtracked a bit, found an animal trail going my way and continued climbing. Within five minutes I crossed the correct trail; somehow I had missed that turnoff. I finally got up high enough that I could see the crater again; it looked like I should soon be able to see into it. After passing a few stone houses and about five ridges later, I still could not see into the crater bowl and was starting to slow down. I checked the altitude and it was about 12,500 feet (after starting at 8,800 feet). I usually seem to "hit a wall" around 13,000 feet so that explained it. It was 12:30 so after finding a sheltered spot in some rocks, I stopped and had lunch. It was chilly again, partly due to the altitude, and the breeze was cool, so I found a rock facing the sun, which was warm, and leaned up against that.

After lunch, and climbing numerous more ridges, I could finally see the floor of the crater, which was at about 14,000 feet. It looked like someone had dumped huge piles of rocks from a gigantic dump truck all over. Very interesting! By this time I realized that I would not have time to go to the upper rim on the far side of the crater, but I still wanted to go up to 14,500 feet so that it would be the same elevation gain as a day hike to the top of Mt. Whitney. The edge of the crater in front of me looked really steep and I wasn't sure that I could get that high there so decided it was best to try going up off to my right, where there was a gentler slope. I was now up to almost 14,000 feet and was sure that I could scramble up another 500 feet somehow. Of course I had to go down a couple hundred feet before reaching the edge of the crater to start climbing up. By now it had finally warmed up, and I was getting the full benefit of the afternoon sun on the slope of the crater. At 2:25 I was at 14,230 feet and I had set a tentative 3:30 turn around time so was doing fine. I was going up a rock field, rocks from a couple of inches to a foot across, very miserable climbing, but at least the rocks were nice and warm.

The rocks only lasted a couple hundred feet and then it turned into a scree field, where it was two steps up and slide back one! After many rest breaks, and shedding my daypack, I made it to 14,500 feet. At this point, there were areas of firmer material underneath and by zigzagging I was able to climb much faster, so decided to go for 15,000 feet, it seemed like a nice round number. Also it was a full moon night and I have really missed the night hikes we used to do in Los Angeles so I was in no big hurry to get home. At 3:39, having reached my goal at 15,040 feet, I regretfully stopped and surveyed the situation. From here it looked like I could continue on up to the rim, with very little problem. I am guessing that the rim must be around 16,000 feet, but that will have to wait until another day when I get started earlier. I can easily understand how mountain climbers get into trouble by not sticking to their turn around times. Going down was much faster; I "skied" down the scree, it only took a couple of minutes!

I took a different route down, thinking I could connect with a trail I had seen earlier, but didn't find it until about 5:15, just as the sun was setting. I had 45 minutes until dark, and wanted to get down below the crater to a main trail before then. By now it was really getting chilly so I put on all my layers but I was still cool. I hadn't been thinking that I would still be above 13,000 feet at sunset. I turned for one last look at the crater wall above me. It was still in sunlight and glowing red, it was so beautiful! Just then I saw what looked like the rounded, snow covered peak of Nevado Coropuna, just poking above the rim. I was puzzled as to why I hadn't seen it before and then I realized that it was the full moon rising! Even after taking many pictures of the moon, which at one point looked like a snowball on the rim, I made it down to the main trail just before dark. This was also a different trail than I had come up on, one I had never been on it before. It looked like it crossed along the edge of the mountain and connected with another trail coming from a twin crater off to the left. I had hiked to the rim of that one over a year ago and returned by the trail I was hoping to connect up with.

As I headed down this trail, I realized that I wasn't getting any moonlight because I was now at the base of the mountain ridge between the two craters. Fortunately, I had my headlight so it was not a problem. It was also getting warmer, now that I was going down in elevation. Just about the time I thought I must have guessed wrong, I ended up on the trail I had been on before and continued on down. By this time the moon had made it over the mountain so I had a delightful night hike back home. I did have to stop quite often on the way down to enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, all bathed in bright moonlight. I got home at 8:15, almost 12 hours after I left. It was a great day, 6,200 feet of climbing (and also descending) while bagging a "fifteener", and then hiking home under the full moon.

Travel Adventure in Peru - Ten Gallons of Diesel Fuel Please

When I go to Oyolo, I always take some extra gasoline with me in a gas can. It is only 120 miles roundtrip but there are NO gas stations between Cotahuasi and Oyolo, and also none in Oyolo. If for any reason I need to do any extra driving (like when I had to go looking for the team from Florida last time) I want to have enough extra gas to get home. Unfortunately I didn't think of suggesting this to the team that came this time.

They had filled up at Marcabamba, the last available fuel before Oyolo (they were coming from Pausa) and then did some extra driving to visit another village before I met them. I had driven my car to Oyolo, left it there and then hiked about 3 hours to meet the team to guide them across the high plains. After they picked me up and we were heading up the switchbacks to the high plains, I realized that they didn't have enough fuel to get to Oyolo and back. I had extra gasoline for my car, but their pickup was a diesel so that was no help. We took a quick vote and decided to keep going and try to have someone deliver fuel to us in Oyolo, as it would have put us way behind schedule to go back and get some.

Then I got us lost as the road looked very different going to Oyolo than it did when I came from there the last time. That was a good reminder to me to turn around and look behind me as well, when I am trying to learn a new route. Our unplanned side trip of course used up more of our scarce fuel, but fortunately we still had enough to get to Oyolo. I figured we could call Cotahuasi and see if a supply truck was coming and have them bring some or order some from Marcabamba and have it delivered by a pack animal. When we got to Oyolo, I talked to Mariluz, who is a sister of Theresa and Isabel. Theresa has a restaurant where we often eat and Isabel is a teacher, who has invited us to talk to her students in the school. Mariluz often takes burros back and forth on the foot trail, from Oyolo to the end of the road at CCahuanamarca.

She brings supplies for Theresa's restaurant and for Isabel, who also has a small store. She said she could radio to Marcabamba and have the fuel sent by truck or combi (minivan bus) to CCahuanamarca and she would pick it up there and bring it back by burro. They have some kind of an arrangement where they can transfer money by radio, like we would make a wire transfer. We paid her for the fuel and transportation to CCahuanamarca and we were supposed to have 10 gallons of diesel by Thursday morning, when the team planned on leaving Oyolo. Wednesday afternoon, I saw her leaving with a burro and two 5-gallon cans but about an hour later she came back without the burro! She explained that she had sent someone else and that he would pick up the fuel when it was delivered in the late afternoon and leave early Thursday morning to bring it to Oyolo. However when I checked Thursday morning, we found out that the combi was too full so they didn't have room to bring the fuel, so he left the burro there and returned alone.

Mariluz said the fuel should arrive there in the afternoon and then someone would bring it to Oyolo by 8:00 pm. When we went to bed at about 10:00, there was still no fuel. In the meantime a truck had come from Cotahuasi with supplies and he agreed to sell us 10 gallons of his fuel, if ours didn't arrive in the morning. The team had a one-day "cushion" in their schedule but had to leave on Friday to get back to Lima in time to catch their return flight to the U.S. That night when I went to bed, I prayed again (as we had been doing all day) that the fuel would be there in the morning. A few minutes later, at 11:30, I heard some pack animals passing through the plaza in front of our hostel.

They had made the whole trip in the dark on a narrow mountain trail. I threw my clothes on and went to check, there were no fuel cans on their animals. I decided to ask if they knew anything about our fuel and they said someone was delivering it to Mariluz! I went back to the hostel and went to sleep, thanking God for answering our prayers. In the morning, Mariluz brought the fuel and with the help of a 2-liter soda bottle made into a funnel, the truck was fueled and ready to go. We drove together up to the high plain, I showed them where their road to Pausa was and I went the other direction to Cotahuasi. Another successful travel adventure in Peru.

Tribes In Kenya - Beautiful Or Ugly?

Kenya has more than 40 tribes. Their role is diminishing slowly, but the tribe is one of the main defining features of living in Kenya. On the one hand, everybody admires the sight of proud Masai warriors, dressed all red with their typical spears and shield. And tribes have social advantages, such as mutual help. On the other hand, the tribes in Kenya are holding the country back. This article provides some background information.

The Big Picture Of Tribes In Kenya

Family in Kenya is all-important. Big extended families live together and look after each other. Then comes your clan, your sub-tribe, and your tribe. Since Kenyan independence in 1963, the government has tried to create a national consciousness, stressing the idea that "we are all Kenyans". But as a result of the tribe system, national identity is very weak in Kenya.

Kenyan tribes are mainly based on language. There are three language groups in which all the tribes can be divided: the Bantu, the Nilotic and the Cushitic speaking tribes. Well-known tribes that still follow the traditional lifestyles as the Masai, Samburu and Turkana tribes are Nilotic. However, many Kenyans speak three languages: their tribal language, English, and Swahili (which together with English is the official language in Kenya).

The biggest tribes are, respectively, the Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin and Kamba (although exact numbers differ widely from source to source).

Tribes In Kenya: Pretty Or Ugly?

Of course, I very much like to watch traditional tribal life. The Masai, Samburu, Turkana tribes people have magnificent colorful jewelry and clothes, impressive rituals, and beautiful songs. Experiencing this is for many one of the big reasons of coming to Kenya.

But let's be honest. How many of the tourists who idealize the tribes in Kenya would be able to live that way themselves? Tribes also mean a belief in witchcraft (and better avoid being called a witch in Kenya!), female genital mutilation, and little individual freedom as the course of your whole life is already fixed at birth by tribal customs.

The "White Masai" movie has made this all too clear. It tells the real life story of a Swiss woman (Corinne Hofmann) who marries a Masai warrior and joins the traditional tribal life in his small village. During the first years, she shows a remarkable ability to adapt. She eats Masai food, sleeps in wooden shacks, and delivers their baby in the bush. But her husband feels increasingly threatened by her independence and abilities. When she opens a small shop in the village, he's jealous. He gets abusive and she finally has to flee with her daughter back to Switzerland.

Tribes In Kenya Business And Politics

Besides culture, tribes play a main role in business and politics. Tribe members 'help' each other, and this goes from , to favoritism in the government and covering each others criminal activities.

The Kikuyu dominate both business and politics. There are several reasons: they are the biggest tribe, have westernized to a big extent, are street-smart in business and the led the independence movement in the 1950s and 1960s. This independence movement became the first big political party, KANU, which dominated Kenyan politics for many decades.

The first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, as well as current president Mwai Kibaki are Kikuyu, and both have shown clear favoritism, if not outright corruption towards their tribesmen. Kenyatta used the land reforms after de departure of the British to make himself and his fellow clan members the biggest landowners of the country. Kibaki was elected in 2002 on the promise to end the ever-present corruption, but once in office did precious little to fight it. Instead, he adopted members of his Kikuyu clan throughout his administration. These people are known as the "Mount Kenya Maffia", after the home region of the Kikuyu around this mountain.

Many voters support a political candidate not because of his ideas or personal abilities, but because he's from the same tribe. Political parties are based on tribes, not on ideas. Elections often come down to the question: which tribe is going to exploit the other tribes? The election struggles of 2007-2008 in Kenya also had a tribal background: many non-Kikuyu voters thought that the Kikuyu (22% of the population) under had "eaten enough" (slang for stealing government funds) under the Kibaki government, and therefore supported a politician from the Luo tribe (Raila Odinga).

While some people in the west romanticize the tribal life, seeing this as a 'purer' lifestyle which is more social and 'closer to nature', I personally am happy that I'm not a part of it, and I believe many Kenyans would benefit from a gradual roll-back of the tribe system.

DIY Tours in Istanbul - The Historical Orient Express Route

The old train that runs from the Oriental-style Sirkeci station in Eminonu to Istanbul's suburbs has seen better days. The train is old, the doors may or may not close all the time, and it's used mostly by Istanbul's lower classes, but the route and stations have a hidden glamorous past, for they make up the last minutes of the famed Orient Express' historical journey across Europe to Turkey.

Train tips: The trip to Bakirkoy takes about 25 minutes and costs 1.40ytl (1.15 USD). A seat on the right hand side, (not the sea side) is more interesting as you'll get good views of the excavation pit at Yenikapi, some local houses and mosques around Kocamustafa Pasha, as well as a breathtaking view of the city walls and old cemetery.

It's not recommended to take this train late at night, and you should keep your valuables tucked away. If you get stuck in Bakirkoy later than you expect, the 94a Beyazit bus leaves from the square above the train station every 15 to 20 minutes. It's safe and the last stop is the Grand Bazaar.

The Stations

Sirkeci: The Orient Express and its journey have become the stuff of myth and legend. Immortalized in countless, films, books and other bits of pop culture, the train still makes one trip into Istanbul every summer. Many train buffs wait at the station to witness its arrival.

• Sirkici station was built in 1889 especially for the Orient Express.
• The train ran from 1889 up until 1977.

Cankurtaran: The closest stop to Sultanahmet. The train rounds Seraglio Point and Topkapi palace before stopping at Cankurtaran. Nice views of the Asian Side and the start of the city's "secondary walls".

Kumkapi: Nearby Balik Sokak, (Fish Street) comes alive at dusk with lively restaurants serving fish, meze, and raki, Expect live music, singing and dancing performed by tipsy Turkish men with big mustaches!

Yenikapi: At the moment, Yenikapi is the site of a huge archeological excavation pit. While digging the tunnel for the new metro and metro station in the area, what is believed to be the original harbor of Constantinople was uncovered. Ships, anchors and gold coins are just a few of the artifacts that have been found here.The site is best viewed from the train platform. For those interested in seeing what's getting unearthed here, there is an excellent exhibit at the Archeological Museum in Gulhane Park showing artifacts and relics found at the site.

Koca Mustafa Pasha: This is the station to grab a seat if you haven't got one, big exchange of passengers. Yedikule: Three things are going on here:

• Trains are stored here in old derelict buildings which belong to the Turkish Train Transportation Department.
• The Yedikule Dungeons and Golden Gate are located here. The dungeons are open to visitors.
• A major construction site is found here for the future metro that will run through the area.

As you leave Yedikule Station and the old city, look out the right side and as you pass through the city walls, there's a great view of the walls, an old graveyard and the old moat which is now full of vegetable gardens.

Next Interesting stop: Bakirkoy (four stops later) Bakirkoy is a large, modern pedestrian shopping area. Three malls and lots of small shops should keep you busy!

A Fantastic Antarctica Cruise and Tour of South Georgia and the Falklands

"Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised". Another quote refers to the icebergs' appearance as "...tombs in some vast cemetery".

My recommended equipment list read like a list for people preparing an assault of Mt. Everest with things like polartek socks and 3 layers of mittens. The temperature charts insisted the range was between minus and plus 5. Seasickness was likely but only while crossing the Drake Passage. My mind was jumbled as I set off for Antarctica.

What would I find to be my truth?

I am happy to say that my trip on Akademik Ioffe with Peregrine Adventures was a treat! It was a 19 day journey from Ushuaia stopping at the Falklands, South Georgia and my 7th continent - Antarctica.

Stanley town Falklands presents a dilemma: it's recent history of a war between England and Argentina is seen in the ship wrecks, war memorials and land mine signs but mostly it feels like an island lost in oceanic wilderness occupied by 3000 hardy souls of 32 nationalities. The rocks on the shore read "endurance" which speaks to the temperament of the people here as much as it does to Shackleton's ship name. The inhabitants of the Falklands could never tame this collection of rocky shoreline, tussock grass and penguin rookeries. Falkland families have lived there for generations and have learned to adapt to the environment, not the other way around.

The feeling of subjugation to the land was reinforced over and over again as the journey continued. South Georgia was our next stop: 15 people living on an island 170 x 40 km of sub-Antarctic wilderness. As we got into our zodiacs my diary reads "mini icebergs all around, lots of birds noises, thick fog, what will we see?" Excitement grabbed us as we neared land: we could hear and smell the 80,000 kings, King penguins that is, living with a few elephant seals on Salisbury Plain.

Diary excerpts as we journeyed south along the South Georgia coast " it looks like the Antarctic today, grey rolling seas and lots of icebergs. The winds are force 12, not actually a hurricane or a cyclone but the winds are as strong as they would being during either. We did sit off shore on the leeward side of a ½ mile long iceberg; hovering in this position did help protect us from the full force of the wind so we were not rolling too mucs. The storm continued as we rounded the south tip of the island...got sick...went to bed...stayed there."

Fortunately I was up and about the next afternoon, back on the bridge that is accessible 24 hours a day with 3 officers always on call. The crew spoke only Russian. Did this add to the mystique of the journey? Perhaps yes.

I took to getting up about 0530, pulling my windproofs on over my pj's and standing out on the bridge wings until breakfast at 0730. It was quiet and humbling to watch the sun bring red, yellow, pink, orange, blue green and purple light to the vast expanse.

Half the time we followed the wandering albatross: days of occasional icebergs and the relentless dependability of rolling waves. The rest of the time were days like jewels: pristine in both spirit and environment.

More and more icebergs appeared - flat-top rectangles in abundance in the Antarctic Sound - but these giants are constantly reworked by a mix of wind and water. "Few other areas of the world present such a fascinating mix of naturally shaped beauties and weirdnesses: a dragon, a minaret, a castle with shattered colonnades, the bow of a sinking ship... silently we pass them in their monumental stillness, caressed and polished by the softly heaving sea."

An apt description I heard of the devastation caused by the whaling in the 1900's was "Nothing of the whale was wasted .... except the whale itself ". The pressure on the whale population grew tremendously during WW1 and WW11. The world need for the meat, oil for lubrication, tanned skins, soap, fertilizer and margarine was intense until finally in 1994, the oceans were declared a sanctuary. Some refer to the whale as "the living gold of the ocean" and the deserted whaling stations dotted along the bays laid testament to the merciless hunt.

A few more diary excerpts (from our stops on Antarctica peninsula): "... now have reached Wilhelmina Bay entrance and whales already...supposed to be a 3 hr cruise... so many whales..." " this was the best yet: sun mountains glaciers seals and whales" ... "3 Minke whales toyed with us for 90 minutes around the ship... the captain even had his video camera out in Paradise Bay as the Minke whales cavorted around the ship..."

We had advance mixed weather reports for the Drake Passage on our last full day in Antarctica - at Paradise and Neko Harbours. But our captain found a window of weather opportunity. We merely undulated across the Drake fighting 40-knot winds and we as we neared the Chilean cost we turned east and had the wind at our backs for the last afternoon.

3292 Nautical miles; 3 continent landings; 8 zodiac cruises; 6 kayak outings; 14 landings; 19 days. Quite the journey.

My diary's final entry: "...it's 11 pm now and about 10C ... we have anchored in the entrance to the Beagle Channel ... we pick up the pilot at 2 am and it is a 5 hr ride in ... have put my camera away ... will just enjoy the scenery now ... I remember seeing a sign in Ushuaia harbour before we left " the end of the world, the beginning of everything "

And so it was.

Travel Adventure in Peru - Ten Gallons of Diesel Fuel Please

When I go to Oyolo, I always take some extra gasoline with me in a gas can. It is only 120 miles roundtrip but there are NO gas stations between Cotahuasi and Oyolo, and also none in Oyolo. If for any reason I need to do any extra driving (like when I had to go looking for the team from Florida last time) I want to have enough extra gas to get home. Unfortunately I didn't think of suggesting this to the team that came this time.

They had filled up at Marcabamba, the last available fuel before Oyolo (they were coming from Pausa) and then did some extra driving to visit another village before I met them. I had driven my car to Oyolo, left it there and then hiked about 3 hours to meet the team to guide them across the high plains. After they picked me up and we were heading up the switchbacks to the high plains, I realized that they didn't have enough fuel to get to Oyolo and back. I had extra gasoline for my car, but their pickup was a diesel so that was no help. We took a quick vote and decided to keep going and try to have someone deliver fuel to us in Oyolo, as it would have put us way behind schedule to go back and get some.

Then I got us lost as the road looked very different going to Oyolo than it did when I came from there the last time. That was a good reminder to me to turn around and look behind me as well, when I am trying to learn a new route. Our unplanned side trip of course used up more of our scarce fuel, but fortunately we still had enough to get to Oyolo. I figured we could call Cotahuasi and see if a supply truck was coming and have them bring some or order some from Marcabamba and have it delivered by a pack animal. When we got to Oyolo, I talked to Mariluz, who is a sister of Theresa and Isabel. Theresa has a restaurant where we often eat and Isabel is a teacher, who has invited us to talk to her students in the school. Mariluz often takes burros back and forth on the foot trail, from Oyolo to the end of the road at CCahuanamarca.

She brings supplies for Theresa's restaurant and for Isabel, who also has a small store. She said she could radio to Marcabamba and have the fuel sent by truck or combi (minivan bus) to CCahuanamarca and she would pick it up there and bring it back by burro. They have some kind of an arrangement where they can transfer money by radio, like we would make a wire transfer. We paid her for the fuel and transportation to CCahuanamarca and we were supposed to have 10 gallons of diesel by Thursday morning, when the team planned on leaving Oyolo. Wednesday afternoon, I saw her leaving with a burro and two 5-gallon cans but about an hour later she came back without the burro! She explained that she had sent someone else and that he would pick up the fuel when it was delivered in the late afternoon and leave early Thursday morning to bring it to Oyolo. However when I checked Thursday morning, we found out that the combi was too full so they didn't have room to bring the fuel, so he left the burro there and returned alone.

Mariluz said the fuel should arrive there in the afternoon and then someone would bring it to Oyolo by 8:00 pm. When we went to bed at about 10:00, there was still no fuel. In the meantime a truck had come from Cotahuasi with supplies and he agreed to sell us 10 gallons of his fuel, if ours didn't arrive in the morning. The team had a one-day "cushion" in their schedule but had to leave on Friday to get back to Lima in time to catch their return flight to the U.S. That night when I went to bed, I prayed again (as we had been doing all day) that the fuel would be there in the morning. A few minutes later, at 11:30, I heard some pack animals passing through the plaza in front of our hostel.

They had made the whole trip in the dark on a narrow mountain trail. I threw my clothes on and went to check, there were no fuel cans on their animals. I decided to ask if they knew anything about our fuel and they said someone was delivering it to Mariluz! I went back to the hostel and went to sleep, thanking God for answering our prayers. In the morning, Mariluz brought the fuel and with the help of a 2-liter soda bottle made into a funnel, the truck was fueled and ready to go. We drove together up to the high plain, I showed them where their road to Pausa was and I went the other direction to Cotahuasi. Another successful travel adventure in Peru.
