Florida Vineyard Tours and Wine Tasting

Muscadine grapes (or scuppernongs as they are sometimes called) are native to Florida and were first used for wine-making by the French Huguenots and early Spanish settlers nearly 100 years before wine was made in California.

They can grow as big as golf balls and ripen individually rather than in bunches over a period of a few weeks in late August and into September. The grapes are grown at vineyards around Florida where one can visit for free tasting and a tour.

The Chautauqua Winery chose its name because DeFuniak Springs was home to the permanent Winter Assembly of the Chautauqua Assembly from Chautauqua County, New York from 1885 to 1928. Many turn of the century homes and the Chautauqua "Hall of Brotherhood" still stand, gracing the shores of a perfectly round lake that is the centre of the city.

The 40-acre vineyard was planted in 1979 and is located 12 miles north of DeFuniak Springs. The varieties of grapes grown by Chautauqua, Carlos (white) and Nobel (red) are improved varieties selected and propagated from native muscadine grapes. A mechanical picker is used to harvest the grapes in the cool morning hours and the grapes are then delivered to the winery for crushing, usually within a couple of hours of picking. This cool picking and rapid processing is essential to capturing the quality and flavour of the grapes. The winery was constructed in 1989 and boasts 70,000 gallons of temperature controlled stainless steel cooperage as well as over 1,980 gallons of barrels for oak ageing. The current wine press was custom made for Chautauqua by the Scharfenberger Company of Germany. It is the largest press of its kind east of the Rocky Mountains.

The press gently extracts the juice from 30 tons of fresh grapes, or 35 tons of fermented reds in a single load. After the crushing and pressing the white grape juice is quickly chilled. When the juice is clarified cultured wine yeast is added and the fermentation begins. White wines are generally fermented at very cool temperatures, usually around 50 - 55 degrees to capture aroma and flavour. Red grapes are crushed into fermentation tanks while select wine yeast is added. The grapes ferment "on the skins" for several days to extract the flavour and the colour from the skin of the grape. When ready the free run fermenting juice is drained and the skin and pulp is pressed. Red wines usually ferment at 70 degrees. Both the red and white wines ferment until all the sugar is converted to alcohol and then the fermentation is complete. The wines are then allowed to settle and any blending is done at this stage. Grapes harvested in the fall are usually ready for bottling in the following spring.

Where is Alicante Airport?

Alicante is for many the gateway to a Spanish holiday, some 80 percent of its flights are made up by tourists and it regularly under takes development plans to cope with the volume of travelers. In 2007, Alicante Airport handled 9,120,631 passengers, 79,756 flight operations and 4,533 tones of cargo. Almost triple the volumes they experienced in 1998.

Located in the municipality of Elche, Alicante airport is conveniently close, only 9 km away from the city center, and the average travelling time for this short journey is anywhere between fifteen minutes to half an hour during rush hour.

Travel to Murcia is only 80 kilometers and takes less than hour. Murcia makes a fantastic stopping point or day trip city; its crammed with things to do and interesting places to visit. Alicantes location on the coast in Southern Spain means it benefits from year round good weather and temperatures which rarely dip below 20 degrees even in winter. During the high summer months temperatures are constantly in the thirties! However Alicantes location on the coast quite often means that the scorching summer temperatures are complimented and soothed by cool off sea breezes.

Does Airport Security Make You Nervous?

Technology and big brother gadgets, for better or worse, have taken us to the next possible step in TSA screening. A passenger's rapid heart rate and heavy breathing sets off an alarm. A machine picks up his skin temperature jumping. TSA crew move in to question him and start the investigation. Is he a terrorist? Or is he simply a passenger nervous about flying?

The US Department of Homeland security have high hopes that screening biometrics, can weed out the bad guys, before they strike. Critics doubt such a system can work. The idea, they say, subjects innocent travelers to the intrusion of a medical exam. The futuristic machinery works on the same theory as a polygraph, looking for variations in body temperature, pulse and breathing that mimic the kind of anxiety exuded by a would-be terrorist or criminal. Unlike a lie-detector test that wires subjects to sensors as they answer questions, the "Future Attribute Screening Technology" (FAST) scans people as they walk by a set of cameras.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has trained more than 2,000 screeners to visually monitor passengers as they walk through airports, questioning those who seem unusually nervous. This new FAST system, would be portable and fast, and placed in areas that scan people as they walk into airports, train stations or arenas. Those identified by the machines would be interviewed in front of cameras that measure minute facial movements for signs of attempted lying. Like the TSA's program, FAST raises reliability questions. Even if machines can spot someone whose heart rate jumps suddenly, that may signal the agitation of learning a flight is delayed, or simply fear of flying. More testing is planned for the next year.

Horseback and Shark Tour Activities in Hawaii

I had the fortunate opportunity to be in Hawaii in the summer of 2007 when the weather was absolutely beautiful for 3 straight months while we took a horseback tour, jumped in a shark cage and learned how to surf. It was my boyfriend and my sister and her boyfriend that found ourselves on the beautiful island of Oahu for one week before we left for the Big Island of Hawaii.

So you are probably thinking what young folks like us might end up doing on our Hawaiian vacation right? Well, let me tell you that we did not have one restful moment at all. We did a lot of our activities on the north shore where every outdoor activity imaginable can be found.

Our first activity was the shark tour where the boat took us 5 miles out to sea and dropped a cage in the water for us to enter like sitting ducks while 10 foot sharks came looking for a meal. My suggestion would be to go on an empty stomach because the ride out is pretty rough.

Now among all of the exciting Hawaii activities the ocean seems to be the sure bets but one of my more memorable activities was the Horseback riding tour that we took in the mountains along the North Shore with Happy Trails Hawaii. This Horse ride tour got my approval once we came up and around a little valley to be exposed to the beautiful and serene sight of Hawaii's North Shore coast. It was a sight to die for and me and my horse named "Oahu" savored the moment.

Among the many things to do while on your Hawaii vacation I would recommend the horseback tour on the North Shore and just about any activity in the ocean, hey you are in paradies so why not take advantage of Hawaii Activities!
